Dear Holy Spirit,
We’ve been talking about Holy Week over the last couple of weeks, and today I want to continue that conversation as we move deeper into the heart of our spiritual year.
Last week, we reflected on Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday—when we remember the institution of the Lord’s Supper and Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. What I didn’t mention then is what happens at the end of the Maundy Thursday service: we carry the blessed bread and wine—Christ’s sacramental presence—out of the nave into a Chapel of Repose. There, we begin an all-night vigil, staying awake with Jesus as he goes to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Then comes Good Friday.
At 12:00 PM, we will gather to walk the Stations of the Cross, entering into Jesus’ Passion through a 30-minute meditative journey.
At 6:00 PM, we will hold our Good Friday liturgy. This powerful, unique service includes scripture readings, solemn prayers, the Passion narrative, and communion from the reserved sacrament. We consume the bread and wine from Maundy Thursday—without re-consecration—reminding us of Jesus’ death. When the sacrament is gone, the sanctuary light is extinguished, symbolizing Jesus’ absence until Easter.
Between Good Friday evening and the Great Vigil of Easter, we enter the silence of Holy Saturday, joining the first disciples in grief and waiting. We’ll talk more about that next week.
If you’ve never walked the full path of Holy Week—from Maundy Thursday to the Easter Vigil—I strongly encourage you to consider making that journey this year. All the details and service times are listed below.
Let’s walk this journey together.
See you Sunday.
Yours in Christ,
Jason+
