How the Episcopal Church helps you in your spiritual journey.
The American Episcopal Church descends from an ancient Christian church founded in England in AD 597. When American colonists came to the New World, they brought their church with them, and after the American Revolution, it was reorganized as the Episcopal Church that we know today. The Episcopal Church keeps good relations with our mother church, the Church of England, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. For more than 1,400 years, Anglicans have been becoming and sharing Jesus’ good news for the world.
We hang together because we know deep down that we need help in our spiritual journeys. We try it out alone, but we fail more than we succeed. It can make us want to give up on our spiritual journeys altogether. We’ve found that the Episcopal Church has the experience and resources to help us thrive as Christians and human beings.

The Church gives us space to explore our faith.
Our church is what is known as a “broad church.” We hold the essentials of the faith firmly, but we allow for disagreements about things that don’t matter as much. We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and we interpret the Bible using tradition (the history of how our faithful parents interpreted the Bible), reason, and experience. We believe the Bible and our faith continue to speak to the world today and that God is calling each of us to explore more deeply a relationship with him through Jesus.

The Church gives us a platform for ministry.
Our church has bishops, priests, and deacons, but we know the real ministers of the church are the baptized people of God who live and work in the world. We accept all kinds of people into ministry. We believe that no matter who you are or where you come from, God calls you to ministry for the good of the world.

The Church’s history and worship provide a solid foundation for our souls.
Our specific church’s history goes back to 597, but we were founded by missionaries whose church life went back to Jesus himself. Our bishops (senior pastors who oversee many churches) can trace their ordinations back to Jesus’ original twelve followers. Through them, we are connected to Christians worldwide in the Anglican Communion, the world’s third-largest Christian fellowship of churches. Our worship, too, unites us with Christians throughout time. Our form of worship is contemporary but is still very similar to what was used in the 300s AD. Both our history and worship provide a firm foundation for spiritual growth towards love, joy, and peace.
You Matter to God.
You Matter to Us.
And that’s what this is about: spiritual growth. The Episcopal Church gives us the space to grow up into love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control (Ephesians 5:22-23). It gives us a foundation for a new kind of life.
