Reimagining Adult Christian Education

Welcome to the new online site of Adult Education at Holy Spirit.

We are currently in the process of thoroughly re-envisioning what Adult Ed looks like at our parish.  This Lenten season, we will be developing a completely new program of educational opportunities and a new curriculum of formation for the next several years.

Why should I care?  Because “education” is not simply one aspect of the Christian life, but the whole of it.  In fact, as one theologian has written, Christianity is “like a school, the purpose of whose pedagogy is the weaning from idolatry and the purification of desire”.  In other words, “worship” is not one thing and “education” another.  In fact, education is as much about learning whom to worship and how, just as worship is a kind of learning how to know, love and speak of God rightly.

So “Christian education” is not just for the curious.  It is for everyone.  We have an opportunity–which is at the same time a gift and a responsibility–to participate in the common pursuit of the truth, goodness and beauty of God as He has revealed it to the world in Scripture.  As St. Anselm once put it, faith seeks understanding.  Following the great St. Augustine, he said that we do not first understand and then believe; rather we believe in order that we might understand.  This is basic to the Christian faith–not just for “academics”, “intellectuals”, the “educated”, but for every Christian.  To be sure, everyone’s understanding of the mysteries of faith will be different.  But that does not mean that we all have a responsibility to understand–as much as we can and to the degree that each of us is able–the faith that we have received.

How will you participate in this adventure?  How will you contribute to it?
